EDITION OFFICE

ESTABLISHED 2015
MELBOURNE, VICTORIA

For Kim Bridgland and Aaron Roberts, directors of Edition Office, architecture ‘can capture and amplify the aspirational qualities of how the individual desires to live their life.’ Through a practice of their own, the pair have pursued their desires to be cultural agents and create a distinct language in architecture, and for the process of engagement with client, site and materiality.

For each of their projects Bridgland and Roberts spend a considerable time at the site, carefully documenting the landscape and prevailing climatic conditions whilst highlighting the site’s significant features and cultural heritage. ‘Dissonant and sympathetic’ are key elements they strive for in their projects; their buildings speak deeply of context whilst often appearing in opposition to it.

Hawthorn House, 2018
Hawthorn, Victoria

With a brief to make a solid and long-lasting family home - both private and open - that will grow with the family’s needs, Edition Office built a striking dual-pavilion house, sheathed with a tactile arched concrete carapace that creates a tangible sense of refuge.

Poured in situ using rough-hewn Oregon formwork boards - which were subsequently cleaned and reused as fencing, tying the building to its surrounds - the resultant organically textured archways provide both a ruggedness and robustness to the build, and a lightness to the interior. This lightness is due to clear sightlines throughout the building; the archways structurally support the building, thereby freeing the interior design from the need for columns.
