LIVES MELBOURNE, VICTORIA

Graduating in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts (photography) from RMIT University, Melbourne, Rhiannon Slatter’s personal interest in industrial production and architecture naturally progressed into working commercially for architectural and interior design firms. She became adept at imparting warmth and texture to often stark and angular structures—something architects often find hard to convey.

Slatter carries this quality through to her personal work. She has held solo and group exhibitions throughout her hometown of Melbourne over the past 17 years. Recently, her work has focussed on the increasing urban sprawl of outer Melbourne. The plain and functional infrastructure of the concrete structures she sees “growing up around her like trees” offers an inspirational palette she has learnt to love rather than to avoid.

Slatter’s manipulated photos reflect her interest in industry, architecture and production and its place in changing our landscapes. In this series, she examines the large-scale fast production process of multiple industrial buildings and sites in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. Layering the images to show a patchwork of a multitude of architectural structures, her carefully crafted images invite intrigue as the viewer tries to discern what is real and what has been created.
